I am not a good reader because I am not good in memorising. That is why bookmarking links of articles and websites has serve me to revise key materials when necessary. After time goes longer, the bookmarks are getting more and complicated in terms of categories.

So, I look for Digg, the most populated social bookmarking site. Although Digg is excellent in displaying top favourite links by enhancing graphical features, it has only several fixed categories for bookmarks. For instance, I have no way to group links as "Religious" and "Lifestyle" is the closest group I could find. Digg is making me dissapointed by its "one-mean-fits-all" strategy.

Then, I look back at Facebook and see whether I can make use of it better. Facebook ables to keep my links but I cannot trace them well because it is made to communicate, not putting weird tagname in the status.

After that, I have found Delicious to serve me well. I can customise my bookmarks because it has tag feature, like what Firefox has. Besides, Firefox can install Delicious application as a sidebar to ease my bookmarking experience. I love using Delicious very much... but it has been purchased by Yahoo! few years before that. It means that I have to register a Yahoo! account in order to make use of Delicious. Well, I get the account and Delicious is making me happy, a lot!

If you are also a bookmarker, do take a try in Delicious and add me (John Doe in Samsara) in your network. Let's share the information together!

Frustrating Home

"One does leave home, because it is no longer home; it's the desire that resembles home. We are far far away from being "homeless", and that's frustrating."

John Doe in Samsara

As usual, people is confused with what I've quoted here. As I am the combination of being phillosophical and introvert, I prefer to comprehend a single word in different meaning. However, some people may wondering whether I'm just playing word-riddles or being a lexicon, and some are praising me for being "deep". It is really funny for me but I appreciate their heartfelt comments. Thanks to some of my good friends who were curious in what I was writing in Facebook, I had replied them and I am now compiling it as one of my blog posting.

The quote started in my mind as I was preparing for my first interview after graduation soon and I have no idea whether life with endless hunt serves me better. It's certainly that I'm not those who miss home too much and being too filial, but I just don't get something right. One is leaving house for something else because house cannot provide the source of satisfation, such as food, entertainment, career, future accompany and so on. That is why we feel unlikely to stick ourselves in house, but indulging and "living" in these desires. Well, we know desires are ever-dangling carrots. Therefore, if we take those desires as our destination to be satisfied, we are far much frustrated than those who have abandoned desires and spent their lives being satisfied living in the moment.

While replying the posting, I had discovered something - I was frustrated because I was not able to live in the present moment, thus being wavered by doubts and worries. That made me remember back the first blog post "Intro" with OneRepublic's "Stop and Stare"... That means my goal is still the same with that back in 2 years ago. Good. Thanks to Cymon's summary, I'm going to stop the wondering thoughts get back to present business. Simple, right? Have a nice day!

On the Mend

Repelling notion shreding focus
from million miles within,
Being shattered, my mind is far
apart from being home.

From here, I've lost my way.
and I'm here, in the rotten shed, my friend.
I'm here, I'm going "home" again
I'm here, I'm on the mend...

Was it you? We resist changes, thus no idea can be generated to make things better. I also agree with his claim that people are lazy and easily drawn out by hanky-pankies, but these are not what they want.
In slow-paced environment like Malaysia, there is nothing to pressure us to do something different. Unlike countries like India and Africa, we are not going to die as long as we are working. We have no need to worry about chaos and calamities because we are still safe (for the time being). Therefore, this comfort zone let us feeling needless to evolve into something new. As what Anil Gupta is saying that depression leads to creativity (as shown in the video below), that is why poor Indians can innovate from something from its rusty junkyard into something novel and sophisticated (and why there is a recent finding reporting that Americans are getting less creative nowadays).

Since we are pampered with "ever-ready" advantages around us, we just don't know how to appreciate the conventional ways of doing things! If we don't really even work hard on the old way, how do we know whether it is really right or wrong? Malaysians are somewhat easily driven by gut feeling and voice things out without rational reasoning. Anyway, Cymon's statement that perfectionism is the internal cause of such failure may be true, but that is not just it. Incentives and law enforcement encourge idea perfectionism, which later kills initiative and creativity! You can see that people seem to be stupid when answering stupid television and radio quizes (even when the answers has been "hinted" to the participants). You can also see the government's effort in "encouraging" more garbage dumping in forbidden areas with panelty is warned on the sign board. If you still cannot get the picture, we can see how dumb is our performance with granted extra marks and undesired restriction in classrooms! Two videos below show findings in case studies relating to incentives, penalties and law-making respectively. Both video uncover the effective methods of creating and initiating better ideas. I hope we get better initiative and creativity from their sharings.

Homosexuality in Buddhism - Sharing from a Kalyana Mitra

Homosexuality was practised in ancient India; it is not unique to the 21st century! It is explicitly mentioned in the Vinaya and prohibited for all Monks and Nuns. Sexual behaviour, whether with a member of the same or the opposite sex, where the sexual organ enters any of the bodily orifices (vagina, mouth or anus), results in expulsion from the monastic order.

A unique person called a 'pandaka' is mentioned in the Vinaya as a sexual non-conformist. The Vinaya stipulates that pandakas are not allowed to be ordained, and if, inadvertently, one has been, he is expelled . According to the commentary, this is because pandakas are "full of passions, unquenchable lust and are dominated by the desire for sex."

The term pandaka however, does not refer to homosexuals in general but rather to the openly effeminate, self-advertising and promiscuous homosexual who is not suitable as a candidate for the celibate, restrained and mindful life of a monk.

The lay Buddhist is not required to be celibate. The third Precept says: 'Kamesu micchacara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami .' The word kama literally refers to any form of sensual pleasure but the emphasis here is on sexual pleasure.

To understand what constitutes "wrong", we need to examine the methods that Buddhism uses to make ethical judgments.
The Buddha questioned many of the assumptions existing in his society, including moral ones, and tried to develop ethics based upon reason and compassion rather than tradition, superstitions and taboo .
The Buddha gives three criteria for making moral judgments.

The first is to act towards others the way we would like them to act towards us. He uses this principle to advise against adultery: "What sort of Dhamma practice leads to great good for oneself?... A noble disciple should reflect like this: 'If someone were to have sexual intercourse with my spouse I would not like it. Likewise, if I were to have sexual intercourse with another's spouse they would not like that. For what is unpleasant to me must be unpleasant to another, and how could I burden someone with that?' As a result of such reflection one abstains from wrong sexual desire, encourages others to abstain from it, and speaks in praise of such abstinence."
In the Bahitika Sutta, Ananda is asked how to distinguish between praiseworthy and blameworthy behaviour. He answers that any behaviour which causes harm to oneself and others could be called blameworthy while any behaviour that causes no harm to oneself and others could be called praiseworthy.

Therefore, in determining right and wrong one has to look into the actual and possible consequences of the action. Behaviour can be considered good or bad according to the consequences or effects it has.
Behaviour can also be considered right or wrong according to whether or not it helps us to attain our goal. The ultimate goal of Buddhism is Nibbana, a state of mental peace and purity, and anything that leads one in that direction is good. "The doctrines of which you can say: 'These doctrines lead to letting go, giving up, stilling, calming, higher knowledge, awakening and to Nibbana' - you can be certain that they are Dhamma, they are discipline, they are the words of the Teacher."
This utilitarian attitude to ethics is highlighted by the fact that the Buddha uses the term kusala to mean 'wholesome', 'skillful' or 'appropriate' or its opposite, akusala, when evaluating behaviour.

The other thing that is important in evaluating behaviour is intention. If a deed is motivated by good (based upon generosity, love and understanding) intentions it can be considered skillful.

The Buddha specifically mentions several types of unskillful sexual behaviour, the most common of which is adultery. The Buddha says that someone practicing the third Precept "avoids intercourse with girls still under the ward of their parents, brothers, sisters or relatives, with married women, with female prisoners or with those already engaged to another." Girls still under the protection of others are too young to make a responsible decision about sex, prisoners are not in a position to make a free choice, while an engaged woman has already made a commitment to another.

As homosexuality is not explicitly mentioned in the Buddha's discourses, we can at best only evaluate it in the same criteria as we judge heterosexuality.

In the case of the lay man and woman where there is mutual consent, where adultery is not involved and where the sexual act is an expression of love, respect, loyalty and warmth, it would not be breaking the third Precept.

Thus should it not be the same when the two people are of the same gender? Similarly promiscuity and the disregard for the feelings of others would make any sexual act unskillful whether it be heterosexual or homosexual.

The Buddha sometimes advised against certain behaviour not because it is wrong from the point of view of ethics but because it would put one at odds with social norms .

In these cases, the Buddha says that refraining from such behaviour will free one from the anxiety and embarrassment caused by social disapproval or the fear of punitive action . Homosexuality would certainly come under this type of behaviour and the social consequences could not be simply ignored as it affects one's life immanently, negatively and without respite. One must realise that in reality such prejudices, no matter how unfair or unwarranted do and will exist, and one must be prepared to face it on chosing a lifestyle not in tune with social 'norms'.

The most common objection to homosexuality is that it is unnatural and "goes against the order of nature". Miriam Rothschild, the eminent biologist who played a crucial role in the fight to decriminalize homosexuality in Britain, pointed out that homosexual behaviour has been observed in almost every known species of animal.
Whatever the cause of homosexuality one certainly does not 'choose' it in the same way one would, for example, choose to have tea instead of coffee. It is either inborn or develops in early childhood. And it is the same with heterosexuality. Laws does not change people's sexual inclinations.
The Buddhist monk's role has always been to teach the Dhamma and to act as a quiet example of how it should be lived. Generally the attitude to homosexuality has been one of tolerance. Theravada Buddhist countries like Sri Lanka and Burma had no legal statutes against homosexuality between consenting adults until the colonial era when they were introduced by the British . Thailand, which had no colonial experience, still has no such laws. In such countries, when homosexuals are thought of, it is likely to be in a good-humored way or with a degree of pity.

Buddhist monks are expected to live lives of celibacy, meaning abstinance from any type of sex. There is no explicit rule prohibiting those with a homosexual orientation from joining the monastic life as long as they maintain their precepts post ordination .

Lay Buddhists are expected to adhere to Five Precepts, the third of which is "not to engage in sexual misconduct." "Sexual misconduct" has traditionally been interpreted to include actions like coercive sex, sexual harassment, child molestation and adultery.

These manifestations of sexual misconduct can apply equally to homosexual and heterosexual behaviour.
The Buddha's teachings does not exhort us to a life of pursuit of pleasure, sexual or otherwise. While the Buddha did not deny the existence of enjoyment in this world, he pointed out that all worldly pleasure is bound up with suffering, and enslavement to our cravings will keep us spinning in a vortex of disappointment and pain.

It cannot be said that homosexuals in countries where Buddhists are in the majority are any more free from prejudice and discrimination than they are in other countries. Neither is it true to say that Buddhists are themselves any more free from prejudiced views than those of other religions. However it is clear that there is nothing in the Buddha's teachings to justify condemnation of homosexuality.
For lay Buddhists, a sexual act would not be breaking the third precept

* where there is mutual consent,
* where there is no harm done to anyone,
* where the breaking of a commitment to another person is not involved,
* and where the intention is to express affection with respect to each other.

The Flat Consciousness and the World

Carter Emmart, Director of Astrovisualization at the American Museum of Natural History, lead up a team of professionals to come up with amazing and in-depth space experiences in the AMNH's Hayden Planetarium. He wish to provide an insight to identify who we are and where we are from much greater perspective, related to the fact that we are included in the universe. As a social science scholar, I am suprised and inspired by what he had mention in his demonstration in TEDTalks in Longbeach, California, in February 2010.
Video displayed below is his demonstration:

"The flat horizon that we evolved with has been a metaphor for the infinate, unbounded resources and unlimited capacity for disposal of waste. It wasn't until we really left Earth, got above from the atmosphere and had seen the horizon bend back on itself that we could understand our planet as a limited condition."

Carter Emmart

Visual display of astronomy has been common to us nowadays. Solid findings have told that our planet is in sphere and we are not staying in the core centre of the universe. We know that, but we just simply move on to our life after that. This fact has been so rigid that most people couldn't care anything but only the curiousity of it. The solid theories bring no great use to us because we are still embracing on the land as usual everyday. We still need to breathe. This notion is so pathetic for me that we take too much things for granted, without realising that these insights in the greater view can helps us to evolve. We like to own and do things our own way. We like to feel the estacy and drugged effect over natural occurances like gain and loss. We like to believe on what we want, instead of what it is. Frankly, we don't really like facts of life like these. In short, we are stuck. I cannot be sure that these are the reasons my teachers in high school unable to persuade me to become an engineer, a chemist or an astronomer, but those are definately my reason to turn myself off from greater science study.

What's so special about his effort is that the video carries message other than astronomical amazement. It reminds us of our distorted notions and the importance to change the points of view. Even thought we are sitting in the spherical globe, we still feel the land is flat. Thus, we have the notion that resources and dump places are always available in "the ever-stretching flat land". Therefore, people feel hard to do good deeds like greening and charity because of the perception of the "infinate space". The video has reminded us that each action we've taken have actually affect us back in a cycle because we live in the space with limited condition. It is alright to misplace assumptions because scientific assumptions about this world have been revamped from time to time. The important matter is to appreciate these scientists' contribution in greater view and live our life in greater significance. By changing our misconception, perhaps we can be more responsible and responsive to our changing environment, as well as to help the world become healthier than before. Perhaps we can feel contributive to save our homeland again.

He indeed had performed brailliantly in translating discoveries that scientists are struggling to explain to the common folks. Thank you.

Video displayed below is the video in the demonstration:

Childish Happiness

<div style="color: #fff2cc; When various religious teachings turn into an influx of mental development in a particular region, gratitude become a core subject to be cultivated in life-long education. However, it does not sound so nice to us. Gratitude seems to be a hard thing to learn among people as young as me, we may just presume that it is impossible in some cases in life. Hmm...

From the word 'gratitude', it directs our mind to common o' words like 'parents', 'elders', 'teachers' and 'friends'. For most of oriental youngsters, we take it like a mutation of genetics, which is hard to be accepted and something to be inherited. As we honour, we may feel awkward (just like taking ginger with sugar... Well, it simply means awkward but not ridiculous) ; as we dishonour, we may feel unconscious. It is certain that angry people always yell that they are aware of being terrible, but are they really aware of that? Therefore, young, urban, casual-talking people tend to feel disgust and shocked if somebody at their age talks of gratitude. It feels like modern 'free-thinkers' screeching and running away from preachers yet believing in something which they are in fear to speak out (No offence, folks... pardon me). Everyone does honour, in actual fact, but are these the only gratitude qualities that we can do? What can we really achieve with gratitude? Are we bound to the halo of 'gratitude'? Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

Albert Einstein

So, what does Ego Speaks Today?

25th April 2009
Whole day of relaxation
Laziness
Refusal to strive

29th April 2009
Procrastination
Abnormal sleeping behavior
Casual harsh words

30th May 2009
Fruitful day
Industrialised effort
Motivation
Punctuality
Normal sleeping behaviour
Idle casual jokes

A Press Article which has Soul

A real story of a home alone boy... Here's the news...
14th April 2008

15th April 2008 (Climax)

16th April 2008

17th April 2008

18th April 2008

20th April 2008

and the recent news

30th May 2008

A desperate mom who had held on her wish to keep his son burst into tears and finally let go of his son to her maternal grandaunt. A mom's love could be unconditional like what we see, but if her mind mixed up with the ideas like 'he's mine', 'it's my responsibility to raise him up' or 'I need someone to stay with me in the future' in her mind, her son's welfare and even her own welfare might not be fulfilled. Uncertainty is everyone's fear, as everyone afraid of another misery happening around themselves or their loving people. Therefore, people are unknowingly holding on desire, in another words, avoiding the uncertainty. The effect of this would be misery. That's why people defend themselves and said: 'I don't hope it to happen too!' After tasting the bitter taste of holding on, I hope that she's really wiping away her tears, wishing her son and herself be healthy, happy and at ease, deep inside her heart.

As for the home alone boy, he's learning to accept the world by letting go of 'self'. My past has much of complaints like how volatility of family affairs and freedom, which seems 'empty' even when they were gone. Perhaps the kid has been 'at peace' with those ideas already. I hope he keeps diligent to learn his life and be at ease with himself. He's my inspiration.

Although the story is quite similar to fairy tales which end with the same o' 'they live happily ever after', that's because we're not 'the prince' or 'the princess'! Time never cut the film of the movie!

I'm not here to judge people and let people comment 'mind your own business', but to mark this as a reflection. A reflection that reminds me of the misery caused by karma of desire without understanding what we are and the aim of life in timeless frame, ever-lasting happiness. The past is over, the future is unknown, now is what we need to be aware of... Hello, are you awaken already? ;]

Intro

William Arthur Ward, one of America's most quoted writers of inspirational maxims have said once:

"The pessimist complains about the wind;
